Biking Bleckley February 28, 2009

March 1st, 2009

It was a cool morning and slightly windy, with a good chance of rain and possible thunderstorms but there was still a pretty good turnout in Cochran Georgia. I was there for the second year and mostly for the hill training. I have to say that the hills were definitely there, but they didn’t seem to be as big or as hard as they were last year. I met a gentlemen named Bryan Horton from Baxley Georgia who was riding a Rahleigh Bike that he had picked up on ebay for about 1/2 what he would have paid for it at a shop. Great bike, real pretty and full carbon fiber.  Bryan is setting up two rides which you can find out more about at my site one is for Relay for Life, the other is for Children’s Miracle Network, I placed links to both rides on my website at http:/www.bmgfitness.com in case you may be interested.

The people at the Bleckley County Chamber of Commerce did an excellent job, SAG was always close, the rest areas well stocked, the routes were well marked and the raods that were full of potholes last year had actually been repaved.

Since this was a ride and not a race, the pace was not hard, but some of the hills were definitely challenging.  The only bad part of the ride was when we hit the 27 mile mark and it began to rain, not hard at first, but it was pretty hard and we were soaked all the way through by the time we finished the 30 Miles. Bryan and I arrived there in time to help move the speakers and such in out of the rain and to speake with some of the people at the Chamber.

It was a great day.

Next Saturday March 7th promises to be an extremely good day for my grandchildren and myself. That will be open house for the BMX at the Parks at Chehaw in Albany Georgia. Open house starts the season, and Chehaw BMX will be hosting the Georgia State Championship this year.

Mrytle Beach Marathon/ Michelob Ultra Bicycle Ride

March 1st, 2009

The trip to Myrtle Beach for the Myrtle Beach Marathon and the Michelob Ultra Bicycle Ride was wonderful. The ride itself was fantastic and as usual I rode with some absolutely wonderful people.

I chose the 30 Mile route. All the money raised went to the Horry County Department of Disabilities.  As many of you may know two of my son’s have disabilities (Autism and Mental Retardation)

The ride from Moultrie was pretty uneventful, we tried a different route and found it much quicker than past trips to South Carolina. One of our son’s Bryan lives in Sumter SC, so we do get up that way a couple times a year.  This route was far quicker. The slowest part of the trip being the 80 Miles between I-95 and Myrtle Beach.

We found a great deal on a hotel room at Quality Inn Suites, 3 Queen Beds, kitchen, balcony, and even a covered pool for only 82.00.  Nice room, really nice lady at the front desk.

During the ride I stopped to help a man whose chain had jumped off. He was riding a single speed and doing quite well until the chain slipped off. I had a wrench and we got the chain back on but in trying to tighten the chain we broke the wrench. We waited for only a few minutes before the SAG showed up and we were back on the road. We rode on to the rest stop and enjoyed each others company. It seems the young man had been working hard to lose weight by cycling and was doing quite well, especially since he owned a barbeque restaurant there in Myrtle Beach. He was riding hard to make up the time he lost and I backed off some to rest my legs, as my knee was beginning to hurt some. About 3 miles form the finish I rode up on a man on a Mountain Bike and we chatted as we headed for the finish. As we headed into the Baseball Stadium where the ride would end, he and I finally introduced ourselves as I told him I was Jerry Goodwin and he told me he was Jerry Williams.

Anyway it was a nice ride, a good cause and if at all possible I will put it on my calendar for next year. It really depends on the BMX schedule and other commitments but it is definitely a ride I would enjoy doing again.

Have a great day

Horrible Hundred

November 17th, 2008

This was a very busy weekend for my family and I.  We all took a trip to St. Cloud Florida so they could visit my wife’s brother who has been a little under the weather and I could ride the Horrible Hundred Bicycle Ride on Sunday.

The ride starts off in Clermont at Waterfront Park on Lake Minneola then the riders take one of 3 routes, 35, 70, or 100 Miles over some really big hills. I really did not know that Florida had hills that size or that there were so many of them.

It seemed like you would get to the top of the hill and fly down to the bottom, but then it would be right back up another hill. On many of the hills you would see riders walking their bikes because the hills were just too steep. I had to get off and walk mine once or twice on some of the bigger hills.

The ride was exactly as described, beautiful ride over all the “mountains” in Central Florida. The SAG was decent, the food was great, the ride was well organized. Well over a thousand riders left the park in three shifts. The 100 Milers left at 8:00, the 70 at 8:15 and the 35 at 8:30. The routes were marked and there were Police at all the busier intersections.

I managed to get a flat about 10 Miles out when I hit a small hole in the pavement, but I carry a spare tube and pump, so I was able to get back on the road fairly quick.

The Florida Freewheelers and Flamingos put on the ride and did an excellent job. I just wish I could have not been so tired to start, and I really wish I would not have had to drive back to Georgia right away.

It is about 5 hours from my house in Moultrie to St. Cloud, then I had to go back about 75 miles to get to Clermont from St. Cloud. Then driving back to St.Cloud to pick everyone up. Then back to Moultrie. So I ended up driving about 5 hours Saturday and over 7 hours Sunday coming back.

I cannot remember when I was ever as tired as I was when I got home Sunday night about 9:30PM.

Even so we all had a good weekend. I got to ride my first Horrible Hundred, and met some really great people and had some fun. My wife got to see her baby brother, and our grandkids got to meet their great uncle. Mike got to see his nephews newphews and his big sis. So all in all it was a good weekend but one I don’t want to repeat real soon. I now have to recover so I didn’t ride this AM.

I will be back on my bike at 5 in the morning though, and get some more training for the Golden Olympics. I will get at least 20 miles in Tuesday Morning.

Have a Great day

Election day in the USA

November 3rd, 2008

I received an email from my friend Mark Hendricks a little while ago, and I thought it definitely deserved sharing with everyone. You see Mark is concerned and so am I about the future of this great country.

I was in the Navy during Viet Nam and was in the National Guard during the first and second Gulf War. I got out just after we invaded Iraq.  I never saw combat, but had the training and if I had to go I would have went where I was sent and did my job to the best of my ability.

Anyway here is a link to the post and email that Mark sent me

I hope you get a chance to read it before you go to vote.

Quest for Gold Continues

October 16th, 2008

I didn’t do really well in the Golden Olympics Cycling events this year. Should I just give up? Nah, what fun would that be? I have redeveloped my training, bought some more videos and training programs, and some more training “toys” that I will be trying out.

Such as I noticed that in the TT the ones with aerobars and a special helmet had faster times so, I found a helmet and areo bars on ebay The helmet would have cost about 200.00 at a shop, I paid 51.00 plus 6.94 shipping. and the areobars would have cost about 40 or more and I picked them up for 15.50. I picked up some new pedals also, and am looking for some good shoes for riding.  EEE cycling shoes are not easy to find nor are they cheap.

New training gear is only part of it though and more and better training is much more important. So I am developing a more involved traing routine and am posting my training as I do it at http://www.isweat.com which is a fantastic place for athletes to stay on track.

You will also be seeing a lot more articles on the various parts of training, what is wroking as well as what is not.

I will also be looking for a local coach and will be doing a lot more long distance rides, mainly centuries and especially when I can find one in mountainous terrain. Actually I have one coming up soon in Toccoa Georgia, The Tour De Tugaloo which is in the mountains between North Georgia and South Carolina.

The 18th of October we plan to attend the “Stepping out for the Heart” program put on by Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton Georgia.

Be sure to check out these site when you have a chance.

update from Golden Olympics

September 29th, 2008

I went to the Georgia Golden Olympics this year on September the 24th and 25th.  I raced the 40K Road Race, the 5K Time Trial on Wednesday as well as the 20K Road Race and 10K Time Trial on Thursday. I did not race the 40K in 2007 but did in 2008. In 2007 I was able to take the bronze medal in the 5K as well as the Silver in both the 20K Road Race and the 10K Time Trial.

This year was a qualifying event for the National Games. This fact brought out some extra fast riders, the Gold in the 40K went to a rider that had not competed in 2007 and the time for the 40K which is 26 Miles was 1.04 Hours. The Silver was just seconds behind and the Bronze was an 1.10 hours.

Similar times were posted in the Time Trials and the 20K with the winner in the 20K finishing in under 10 minutes which is over 26MPH. My times were all in the 17 and 18MPH range so I was not in the running for a medal.

I did stay with the lead Peloton for about 10 Minutes at the very beginning and then is when I pulled a hamstring as we were going up a hill.

On Friday I went for a recovery ride of about 15 miles, slowly trying to recover from the ride and then sit and was on a conference call with Jon Benson and 8 other fitness professionals. Since I was still nursing the pulled hamstring, it was good to just sit for a while, but 8 hours in a row is jsut crazy. Got a lot of great information though, and let the hamstring heal some. Saturday was another ride and slowly the hamstring was coming around.

Sunday I did 26+ Miles and averaged right at 17 MPH. Today I did only 5 miles but it was on the Mountain Bike, 2.5  miles out, mostly downhill, 2.5 miles back mostly uphill with the trailer loaded with groceries.

I will be starting now to train for next years, my goal now is to get to where I can finish my 26 Mile route in less than 1 hour, and I will need to incorporate much more hill training. The hills and the wind on day 1 was the real hard part to get through. The wind was not as bad the second day and it was much cooler.

Anyway I won’t be going to California in 2009. I will be better ready  in 2009 for the off year and will be faster than greased lightning in 2010 when the next National Qualifier will be held. I know what times to beat now, so I will be doing a lot of extra long rides, Centuries as well as metrics, and I will also be riding BMX, which should also help with the speed.

Have a great day,

Watch for updates

Jerry

This is a very sad event

September 14th, 2008

I received the following email from a fellow Internet Marketer. I thought that sharing it here may help his situation some.  I know that many of us have had tough times to get through and it always helps to know someone cares.

I think I heard Joel Comm say something like  “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care”.

Here is Clay’s email:

If you received this email already please accept my apology. I tried to send it out from the ER server twice and it kept locking up. Probably because of the number of recipients.

I have not been around much this past week due to a tragic loss in my family. My wife’s son was killed in a car accident a week ago Sunday. The funeral services were held Friday.

I put a simple web page up and I would like to ask you all to visit the page and please help if you can. http://mammothlist.net/aaron.htm

Also please keep us in your prayers as these are very trying times for us right now. Personally, I just need a little more time to comfort my wife and her daughter as they mourn their loss.

5th Annual Nut Roll

September 14th, 2008

Saturday the 13th of September the Pecan City Pedalers in Albany Georgia held the 5th Annual Nut Roll. The Nut Roll is an exceptionally well organized bicycle ride for riders of all ages and abilities. There were people at the ride anywhere from 10 to 80. I don’t know how many riders were there. The ride last year had 300 riders, I don’t think we had quite that many this year. The price of Gasoline at over 4.00 a gallon probably had something to do with the smaller turnout.

In all though the ride was very good, absolutely great exercise, great comraderie. Even some pretty decent barbeque for lunch was furnished by Wagner’s Barbaque and actually served by Eric Wagner himself, who is also a member of the Pecan City Peddelers.

This week has been pretty busy all around, since Thursday was Patriot’s Day and there were  a lot of celebrations of the sneak attack by the terrorist cowards in 2001. An attack that pretty much had the opposite effect of the perpetrators. Instead of detroying the US and its economy and it steadfastness, Bin Laden and crew actually brought out the patriotism in many of us.  I don’t like war and I don’t like to fight, but when I am attacked or my family is attacked or my country is attacked, you can bet I will be right at the front leading the charge to defend us.

I managed to get about 25 Miles in Thursday and Friday before breakfast, Then Saturday I did the Nut Roll. I had to get up at 4:30 to get to Albany on time. I went to the Parks at Chehaw and helped with parking the cars, then started the ride at 8:00 AM. There were 30 Mile, 47 Mile, 62 Mile and 100 mile routes, I took the 47 Mile Ride.

On the 47 Mile ride there were 2 rest stops and two water stops to make sure everyone stayed well hydrated, so it was not a fast ride, no one was really in race mode, especially not me. I rode more just to get the time on the bike and for fitness. It was very hot, about 90 most of the time and execpt for some shade when we went through some tall pines it was mostly open and sunny.

I thought of the people in Houston as Hurricane Ike had come ashore and many were stuck in their homes, many still are as I write this. The flooding left by something like that is really devastating. I was involved in some major flooding back in Ohio in 1981 so I have some firsthand experience with floods, no fun at all.

Anyway today is Sunday the 14th of September, The Golden Olympics is 19 Days away, and right now I feel like I may not be quite ready, but I am hoping to peak at the right time and going to do everything I can to win or at least place in my age division there.

You all have a great day

Jerry Goodwin

Today was another good day for training

September 5th, 2008

You all know that I am training for the Golden Olympics and will be racing my bicycle in 4 events starting with a 40K Road Race and a 5K Time Trial the first day.

Today I did 26Miles and averaged slightly over 15MPH over the entire course. The course I chose is 95% uphill some are steeper than others, but there is almost no spot on the route that you can really coast. Today.

The course seemed quite a bit easier today.  I will keep the course and keep trying to improve my time each day. The race is September 24th and 25th, so I need to get as good as I can by that time, and it looks like I am on track to at least get to about 18MPH, possibly 20 over the course.

Oh, by the way I am adding some bicycle maintenance/repair course to my ezine articles.com articles so if you are a rider, you may want to check them out.

Training Continues and keeps getting better

September 3rd, 2008

Today I did 30 miles in just a little under 2 hours which averages right at 15 MPH, not enough for a Gold Medal at the regular Olympics and I definitely am no threat to Armstrong, Sastre, Landis or Vande Velde, but it was my best day so far. Not only that but most of the route was uphill. I have been searching to find the right route and wanted it to be mostly an uphill route because the route in the Golden Olympics will be considerably hilly and if I can make the Nationals, they will be held in San Francisco.

After that Ruth (my wife) and I rode down to the Coffee Shop and had a soda, about 2 miles real slow. It is nice to slow down sometimes. The ride tomorrow will be Even better, I can feel it.

Notice to that I have added and article feed in the blog so you can check out my articles at ezinearticles.com

There was a few times when I wasn’t sure if I could make the top of those long hills, but I kept pedaling and made it to the top, sometimes the hill seemed like it would never end.

I remember a story about George Hincapie. George had told his coach that he wasn’t really a climber. His coach told him that he should take each hill with the attitude that here is another hill, I am not real good at these yet, but I get a little better each time I do one.

Several  months later when asked by his coach , what are you? George answered I am a Climber.

I know I may never get to the point of being able to ride with the likes of Hincapie and the other pros, but I am bound to be a climber, very soon.

Have a great day,

Whatever you choose to do in life whetehr it be your weight loss goals, weight lifting goals, your business goals, it doesn’t matter, give it your best shot and if you go down, get back up and get back in the game.

I am hoping to take at least one Gold Medal at the Golden Olympics, but if I don’t I will still be back next year even better than this year.
